  • Lot Description:
    AMERICAN BASKET-SEAT PARK PHAETON, 1860s
This extremely lightweight and compact two seat Phaeton would have been highly fashionable in New York in the 1860s, when these were driven by ladies through parkland with a well-appointed equipage. The steam-bent seat is impressed with a fine basket-weave pattern and sits upon finely forged iron brackets and very light elliptic end springs joined by an iron-braced reach. The dropped footwell is mounted with an iron dashboard frame for covering with leather. This example was imported to Australia about ten years ago and restoration begun with the replacement of one damaged wheel. It is generally sound and will require some minor coachwork, painting and trimming. This design of phaeton was usually equipped with a French hood in leather, which would be a worthwhile exercise. All of the required components are available from Mahbrook Carriages Supplies in NSW.
