  • Lot Description:
AN ENGLISH BOW FRONT BROUGHAM, 1860s
The Brougham was a light, four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage popular during the nineteenth century and named after the politician and jurist Lord Brougham, who had a carriage built to his particular specifications by London coachbuilder Robinson & Cook in about 1838. The vehicle was to be enclosed, able to seat two passengers in luxury, with occasional seats for two more, plus a driver and a groom. It also had to be light and require just a single horse, and have a full cut-under fore carriage to allow it to turn in its own length in the narrow streets of Londons business district. The design quickly became popular and was copied in Paris and in New York by bespoke coachbuilders. Variations included an Extension-front Brougham, which had four full seats inside a longer body, Square-front Broughams referencing the shape, and the Bow-front Brougham as in this example, perhaps the prettiest version. This attractive and well proportioned single horse Brougham was rescued into a Victorian collection evidently after the fore carriage had been salvaged for another project. It underwent considerable restoration in 2010 including having new hickory wheels fitted, new channel and rubber tyres, new roller bearings in the hubs, a remanufactured fore carriages of the correct design, repairs to the doors and framing, replica coach handles to the doors, a leather covered dashboard, and sourcing a superb pair of full Pagnell steam-bent, iron braced, individual shafts. The restoration was then put aside as all of the complicated work has been completed. There remains to be completed some minor coachwork repairs, painting, trimming, and fitting of new glass windows, after which this lovely carriage will be ideal for the enthusiast wanting a lightweight antique formal vehicle for shows or for hire use.
