  LONG SHAFT TRAINING BREAK WITH OUTRIGGER, J H STABB, STAWELL, VICTORIA 1880s
  Training breaks are used to exercise a horse, and for training a horse into carriage driving. The very long shafts allow the driver to be set well back in case the horse kicks, so the harness traces are usually supplemented with long trace extensions back to the swingle bar in front of the vehicles floor. This example has the added advantage of a retractable outrigger swingle bar so that a second horse can be harnessed on the off side of the vehicle for both training and exercise, and a sturdy brake. There is also a rear step for an additional handler or for access over the seat if required. The vehicle was found in Stawell, Victoria in 2008 and joined the extensive carriage collection at Mill Pond Farm in Braidwood where it was in regular use. The very large wooden hub iron-tyred wheels were cut and shut by Mark Burton, and the vehicle generally put into a safe working condition without addressing any cosmetic work as it is an active working vehicle. Generally kept oiled and waxed, it retains much original paint and scrollwork and will clean up again into a very fine training vehicle or will also make a handsome show break with paint and trim attended to. The seat upholstery is original and the makers ivorine tag is affixed to the seat. Extremely rare in this excellent original condition.
