  Scott, Alexander Walker. Australian Lepidoptera and their Transformations, Drawn from the Life, by Harriet and

Two volumes in eight parts, folio, with 21 handcoloured lithographed plates, with the second-issue reprinted title-page, some text leaves aged as usual, plates fine and clean, with the wrappers, loose in a later cloth portfolio.   A complete set of the parts issue of this outstanding – and definitive – work on Australian entomology, illustrated by a beautiful series of handcoloured lithographed plates by Harriet and Helena Scott, daughters of the author and, after Lewin, the most accomplished Australian natural history artists of the colonial era. Alexander Scott himself seems to have viewed his daughters’ contribution to the work as exceeding his own in importance, placing himself below them on the title-page as a mere annotator and so presenting the book primarily as their work. The first volume was published in London, in four parts, by John van Voorst in 1864. The second volume, however, remained unpublished for another 25 years until it was published posthumously by the Australian Museum in Sydney. The nine original drawings for the 1864 volume were prepared by Harriet and Helena Scott, who also drew seven of the nine plates on the lithographic stones themselves. The two remaining stones were prepared by S.T. Gill and Edmund Thomas and the plates were then printed in Sydney by Allan and Wigley before being sent to van Voorst in London. The sisters completed their father’s work after his death, ultimately preparing all of the outstanding illustrations in the complete work.
