  • Lot Description:
Rede, Geraldine. A Little Book of Trees [wrapper title]
Octavo, comprising woodcut illustrations, some coloured, folded and ribbon-tied in the Japanese manner in original illustrated titling-wrappers (ribbon broken). Melbourne, The Artist, 1909.
  • Notes:
Essentially a series of prints, this very scarce little book is one of the earliest examples of colour relief prints produced in Australia, a full decade before the medium was generally adopted in the 1920s, when woodcuts and linocuts became a dominant medium, most notably amongst women artists. Rede and Violet Teague had combined in 1905-6 to produce their distinguished volume of woodcuts, Night Fall in the Ti-Tree. That ambitious experiment was followed by Geraldine Rede in 1909 with this handmade volume of woodcuts. Like the earlier work, it was strongly influenced by Art Nouveau forms, with the sinuous elegant lines of Australian trees lending themselves exceptionally well to the new style.
