  • Lot Description:
Shirlow, John. The “Melbourne Set”. Etchings by John Shirlow
Large folio, six original signed etchings mounted with title–labels on rectos of leaves, original cloth–backed boards, cord ties, fine. Melbourne, Edward A. Vidler, 1920.
  • Notes:
Rare: the Dedication copy, inscribed to the dedicatees, Mr. and Mrs. John Garibaldi Roberts. Loosely inserted or tipped–in on the terminal blanks are many related ephemeral pieces, including exhibition catalogues, letters, etc. Most notable is the series of twelve photographs assembled on the back pastedown endpaper of groups assembled at the Roberts’s homes. The many individuals, apart from the hosts, include Shirlow, R.H. Croll, Hal Gye, and frequently, C.J. Dennis. This edition was limited to 80 sets, each signed by the artist. The rarity of this folio on the market is probably explained not only by its small limitation but by the clear fact that the etchings were expected to be mounted and framed.
