  Gill, Samuel Thomas. Part the First Containing 24 Sketches of the Victoria Gold Diggings and Diggers
  As They Are By S.T.G. [bound with] Part the Second Containing 24 And Completing a Series of Forty–Eight Sketches of the Victoria Gold Diggings and Diggers As They Are By S.T.G. [wrapper titles]. Two parts in one, small quarto by dimensions, with the complete series of 48 lithographs, the two parts bound together in old calf with the illustrated titling panels of the original enveloping wrappers bound in. Melbourne, Lithographed & Published By Macartney & Galbraith, August, 1852.
• Notes:
  Rare: a complete copy of the two parts of Gill’s first plate book: “drawn on the stone by Gill himself, the plates retain the freshness and wry observation which characterise his best watercolour drawings” (Wantrup). Gill’s busy views of goldfields life and early Melbourne street scenes have helped shape the way Australians see their past. Even when his work was more within the general tradition of urban and pastoral topography his characteristic emphasis on the human element in the landscape is most apparent and what one might expect to be arid sketches of city buildings, for example, are portrayed as scenes of vibrant human activity.
