Lot Description:Gilks, Edward. The Digger’s Road Guide, to the Gold Mines of Victoria, and the Country Extending 210 Miles
round Melbourne. Carefully Compiled from Authentic Sources & Lithographed by Edwd. Gilks. Lithographed map within borders, printed area 195 x 255 mm, small vignette inset, in a window mount. Melbourne, Published by S. Leigh, August 1853. -
Notes:Rare and highly ephemeral: a highly detailed and accurate map of the colony issued separately at 2/6, showing the major diggings, roads, townships, squatting routes and runs, halting places, natural features, and so on. This is the only such digger’s pocket-size road map to have been produced by a recognised gold rush artist. Edward Gilks – one of the founders of the Victorian Fine Arts Society – worked as a commercial engraver in Melbourne after arriving from England in January 1853. Not in Tooley.
