    1952 PEUGEOT 203
    Excellent, fully restored example
  • Notes:
Considered by some as the first post-World War II 'world car', the Peugeot 203 was the sole model produced by the French car manufacturer between 1948 and 1960, and replaced the earlier 202. Notable as Peugeot's first monocoque bodied model, the 203 was powered by an unusual 'oversquare' 1290cc four-cylinder engine noted for its hemispherical combustion chambers in a light metal cylinder head. The 203's transmission was a column-mounted three-speed manual plus overdrive, though early examples delivered by Peugeot between 1949 and 1954 were without synchromesh on the bottom ratio. Drive was to the rear wheels, suspension was independent all 'round with a transverse leaf spring up front and coil springs with a Panhard at the rear. During an incredible 12-year production run, almost 700,000 Peugeot 203s rolled off the assembly line in France. There was Australian assembly too, beginning in 1953, thereby become the first of the marque to enter production here. The final Peugeot 203 rolled off the production line at Peugeot's Sochaux plant in early 1960, by which time it had already been replaced by the 403 of 1955. Subject to a bare-metal restoration by its previous Peugeot Car Club (Victoria) owner, this 1951 Peugeot 203 presents in excellent condition throughout. Originally painted Tan, it is now finished in a modern Peugeot Silver hue which really suits its period lines, which is contrasted nicely by a lovely Red vinyl interior. The 203’s paintwork and chrome trim are in excellent condition and the bodywork nice and straight, while inside the art-deco influenced interior is a thing of beauty. The dark red (almost burgundy) vinyl trim is near faultless, over nice grey carpets, and the period perfect painted dashboard in lovely condition. The 203’s cream steering wheel has some age to it, too, which just adds to the character inside. Indeed, all the other interior fixtures and fittings are in great shape, so this Peugeot presents like a factory original. It is indicating 11,123 miles. The only minor blemishes apparent are to a couple of the weather strips, which are a little worn, some marks to the carpet mat in the boot, and a bit of patina under the bonnet. In the hands of a fellow Peugeot club member for the past 20 years or so, this 203 has been regularly maintained but required little, having been stored and not driven for the past eight years. It comes with pictures of its restoration, a Workshop manual, and a spare fuel pump and oil filter. This is a lovely example of an early Peugeot that needs little to bring it back to its best. The 1951 Peugeot 203 was registered and is now being sold here unregistered.
