    1965 PEUGEOT 403
    Lovely, largely original Peugeot 403
  • Notes:
Replacing its first post-War design, the long-lived 203, the sleek new Peugeot 403 was introduced in mid-1955 and continued in production until late in 1966. The 403 was reminiscent of the rather rotund 203 in some ways but it was styled by Pinin Farina, the beginning of a collaboration which would see the Italian producing designs for Peugeot for more than 50 years. The 403 featured modern three-box styling on a 2660mm wheelbase, powered by an enlarged-version of the 203's four-cylinder engine, now out to 1468cc. It still featured pushrod-actuated valves, hemispherical combustion chambers and a crossflow cylinder head, to now produce 65 hp at 5000 rpm and 75 lb/ft of torque at 2500 rpm. An unusual mechanical feature at the time was the 403's thermostatically controlled engine fan. Until 1958, the leading edge of 403's nose also carried an angular, forward-leaning chrome lion bonnet ornament, which was Peugeot's trade mark. However, this was removed in 1959, due to safety concerns, and instead the logo was incorporated into a shield-shaped grille emblem. The Peugeot 403 was subject to numerous refinements during its production run, including semaphore-style trafficators on the C-pillars being replaced by indicators in the light clusters, headlights modified to conform to new standards, and in 1957 parallel windscreen wipers were substituted for the original 'cross hands' design. Windscreen washer nozzles were also relocated and the semi-circular horn ring in the lower half of the steering wheel was replaced by a full circular unit. A total of 1,214,121 of all 403 types, including commercial models, were produced, making it the first Peugeot to exceed one million units in sales. It was effectively superseded by the all-new Peugeot 404 in 1960, though the 403 remained in production until 1966 for budget buyers. Original and largely unrestored, this 1965 Peugeot 403 is a very genuine example. Its French Blue exterior paint was refreshed at some stage and still presents in great condition, otherwise this Peugeot is as it left the factory. There’s some bubbling to the paint in one of the sills, but otherwise the exterior is in good shape with all body accoutrements and shiny chrome, and it sits on its original steel wheels with hubcaps. Inside, the Blue vinyl interior is all original, and in remarkably good condition, though of course there’s the patina of almost 60 years of use. The floors now wear new blue carpets, replacing the original rubber mats, and under the dash is a radio/cassette player, with large box speakers fitted to the rear parcel shelf. The 403’s speedo shows 43,714 miles which could well be genuine. Under the bonnet the 1468cc four cylinder has in recent times had a new water pump, and the fan and radiator top hose have been renewed. Purchased more than 12 years ago from a fellow Peugeot Car Club member in Torquay (Victoria), the time-warp 403 is being sold with an Owner’s Manual and spare oil filter. Currently registered, it is being sold unregistered.
