  • Lot Description:
    HORSE DRAWN SYDNEY OMNIBUS
This beautifully constructed Sydney Omnibus is typical of the public transport vehicles which plied the streets of Sydney between the 1850s and the 1920s. The early history of the vehicle is unknown, but its construction suggests that it is based on a surviving example and will have had some extensive old reconstruction in the coachwork. It was for many years a part of the well-known Wares Livery Stable collection in Sydney and was used in several films and for hire. Almost no other examples of the double deck Sydney Omnibus have survived, making this a rare opportunity indeed. The National Museum of Australia has an incomplete single deck omnibus which shares several design features with this example. The coachwork seats about ten passengers inside and about ten on the top deck, plus the driver and offsider. Winding steps ate the rear afford access to the top deck with its "garden bench" seating. The wheels have been regularly maintained and there is a sturdy foot-operated brake, and a pole. In their day, Sydney omnibuses were drawn by two to five horses depending on the route.
