  • Lot Description:
    1914 BURTON STYLE GYPSY WAGON
The Burton wagon, one of eight for so variations in caravan designs favoured by travellers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, featured sloping straight sides over a platform that reached over the wheels, with opening windows in the sides and back, doors and a porch at the front with a curved roof supported by elaborately carved brackets. Different makers in Britain could be identified by the carved details that they favoured on their particular designs. Most gypsy wagons were built in the first four decades of the 20th century, although examples are recorded from the 1880s and 1890s. This lovely example has a mollicroft roof with opening coloured glass windows for ventilation and sliding side and back windows. The axles are dated 1914. The property of the Vicar of Waterperry in Oxfordshire from about 1972, it was restored by Robert Hugg of Worcestershire between about 2000 and 2010 and the wagon was brought to Australia in 2017 (at a cost of over A$70,000). Smaller than most in scale, it has a comfortable double bed which slides back when not in use, a chest of drawers, lockers, a china cupboard and a "Queenie" cast iron stove. Electric lamps are fitted inside with a power cord for operation from mains power. The interior is attractively "scumbled" to imitate oak graining, and the exterior is beautifully chamfered and painted with applied carved details. The most recent iteration saw the vehicle being used for display only and the shafts are not suitable for use with a horse, however steam bent shafts can easily be fitted if desired, and with some general structural attention the vehicle could be used carefully with a horse, otherwise it would make a superb display item or a useful study or camping accommodation. Gypsy wagons are also popular for use at fairs where one might makes ones fortune, telling fortunes!
