The Spring Art & Antique Auction, including the Estate of Madame Verna Greene

  • Description:
The Estate of Madame Verna Greene

Madame Verna Greene was a business pioneer, visionary, and world Judge, who left an enduring legacy throughout the hairdressing and stylist circles of the world.

Before the business world knew her as Madame Verna Greene, Mrs Verna Young grew up in country South Australia, when at fifteen she moved to Adelaide for an apprenticeship in a salon. She married a young musician from the Adelaide symphony orchestra, Charles Greene. Living her life as a house wife she became bored and dreamt of starting up her own salon. In a time when many women were not expected to work she was determined to get back to work in a hair salon. While working and further developing her skills in hairdressing and customer service she continued to dream of bigger and better things. Her dream finally came to fruition when she managed to secure premises in the Adelaide Arcade with an investment of ninety pounds and a rent free period of twelve months. Over the years she built her hair salon portfolio up to eleven premises around Australia, including launching the first Salon for Gentlemen “The Gentry”, in Collins Street Melbourne which was a first for it’s time.

The peak of her career came, when Madame Greene was invited to Vienna, earning the highest accolade in the industry as a “World Judge” of which she judged the crème de la crème across Europe, Austria and France. Madame Greene wanted to be the best of the best in her field, but she also wanted to make sure that there was a platform for her to share her passion and was determined to start a private hairdressing school. Her determination paid off in the end which saw the Melbourne College of Hairdressing and Beauty Culture open its doors in 1963. Madame Verna Greene was active in the College until her retirement to her rose garden estate in Wonga Park 2007, where she passed away on the 1st of November 2012.
