Description:The Estate of Roger Bond
Mr Bond was an enthusiastic collector for over 40 years. Roger had a passion for early 20th century Rover cars and was a member of the Rover Car Club of Australia as well as the Veteran Vehicle Club of Australia. Roger developed a keen eye for vehicle restoration and would travel across the country visiting swap meets and auctions as well as looking through farm sheds to collect a number of Rover cars and parts over the years. Roger’s other great passion was fine Chinese porcelain, of which his collection was wide and varying. Roger was also an admirer of the Buddhist faith, and developed a love for the philosophy and its beautiful artifacts.
Roger demonstrated a methodical approach to all his collecting, whether it was Rover cars or Chinese porcelain which resulted in an extensive and detailed collection. Roger would fully immerse himself in a field, which included extensive research, correspondence with experts and travels around Australia and the world to document his passion, all the while jotting down notes of any piece of information no matter how small as to add to his extensive record. Roger accumulated some 200 reference books on Chinese porcelain as well as a vast array of Veteran and Vintage vehicle books, records, manuals, and blue prints. Roger used this wealth of information to sometimes call out inconsistencies in various publications of which he was not shy to write a letter to the editor informing them of their mistake and give an appropriate correction, with one such letter sent to the presenter Gordon Brown of the ABC’s Auction Room.
Roger would regularly visit various auctions hoping to pick up bargain pieces of porcelain that may have been catalogued incorrectly. Utilizing his wealth of knowledge in the area, he could quickly distinguish a piece as being of an earlier period or of a superior maker. Roger was constantly exploring different areas of collecting, over the years Roger explored Rover cars, porcelain, pottery, art, and photography.
Roger worked as a Senior Administrator at RMIT when he retired, and held degrees in Commerce, Behavioural science, together with a Master’s degree of Education and Administration. Roger was a keen runner and completed many marathons both in Australia and overseas and was also heavily involved with the local bridge club of which he thoroughly enjoyed. -
