  • Notes:
Note: The Battle of the Centaurs is one of Michelangelo’s early works. He was just 17 years of age when he made it and worked in Lorenzo de Medici’s Garden of San Marco under the tutelage of Bertoldo di Giovanni The inspiration drawn from ancient sculpture is evident in this work. It is very similar to ancient sarcophagi and the scene it depicts is from the mythological story of the Rape of Hippodamia on the day of her marriage to the King of the Lapiths According to Professor Howard Hibbard, leading authority on Italian art of the 16th and 17th Centuries, one can foresee in this work the principal motives of Michelangelo’s later work. There is a sense of dynamic force generated by the mass of intertwining bodies seemingly ready to tumble out of the marble slab. A detailed study of the work has revealed that the chisel marks were made from the left. Michelangelo was left-handed. Like most sculptors, he was able to work with both hands to reach the various parts of his sculptures, however, he preferred working from the left.
