The Rondanini Pieta, after the antique, by Michelangelo Buonarroti
Marble-effect patina gypsum plaster cast from the original mould by the Gipsoteca Nazionale di Firenze
    195cm high, 72cm wide, 80cm deep
  • Notes:
Note: Michelangelo worked on this sculpture until six days before his death at the age of 88. Unlike the Rome and Florence Pietà sculptures, the body of the grieving Mary and that of her son Jesus fuse together, as though travelling back in time towards the miracle of birth. It differs stylistically to the intricately detailed sculptures that Michelangelo made in his physical prime. The incomplete and elongated bodies of the Rondanini Pietà give the sculpture an abstract flame-like appearance that conveys a sense of dynamic upward motion. It is believed that this sculpture was from a series of works that Michelangelo intended to create for his own tomb. The form and content resonate with the symbolism of physical frailty and yet have a spiritual uplifting force that is deeply moving.
