    160cm high, 115m wide, 100cm deep
  • Notes:
Note: The original of the Belvedere Torso was sculpted in marble around the 2nd century BC by an unknown artist. This fragmentary marble statue, on display in Rome since the Renaissance, is a copy of a Greek bronze statue dating from the 1st century BC. It was discovered in Rome in the early 1400s. Michelangelo and his contemporaries would have seen this work in the Belvedere Courtyard of the Vatican Palace where it was displayed alongside other great works of antiquity. The poses of many of Michelangelo’s figures in the Sistine Chapel frescoes reveal the widespread influence that this ancient masterpiece had on the great Renaissance artists. Dr Ian Jenkins, Senior Curator of Greek antiquities at the British Museum supports this claim and argues that Michelangelo saw in the Belvedere Torso an object that represented the power of sculptors to transcend nature and to become independent and creative forces in their own right.
