  • Notes:
While her last name immediately evokes an image of her famous husband Emanuel Phillips Fox, Ethel was an extremely talented artist in her own right. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she developed a passion for the impressionist masters, namely Pissarro and Monet. Although she did not strictly stick to their style, they pointed her in the direction of what became known as Post Impressionism, a more linear and colorful exploration of various subjects painted en plein air. Although her artistic achievements were recognised by artworks that were selected to be displayed at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, her career was considered second to her husbands. This was commonplace for female artists in the belle époque era who were not taken seriously, despite the high quality of their work. The vibrancy of the flowers, when compared with the muted tones of the figures and building, showcase Ethel’s praise for the environment. Accordingly, the charming artwork is indicative of both Parisian culture at this time, and the development of the post-impressionist movement from impressionism. It provides a snapshot into her life, as well as voicing the bohemian nature of Paris where social activity took place in the streets rather than taverns, nature was celebrated like never before, and people experienced a sense of public freedom and pleasure. In more recent times, Ethel’s work has been revived, most notably by the Queensland Art Gallery which showcased her body of work in an exhibition titled ‘Art, Love and Life: Ethel Carrick and E Phillips Fox’ in 2011.
