  • Notes:
Grace Cossington Smith is one of Australia’s most celebrated painters of the twentieth century. Her work was significant in the establishment of the Australian response to European post-impressionism. She drew inspiration from her surroundings, bringing them to life through her brilliant use of vivid colour and brushwork. Her motif of expressing form and depth using vibrant colour made her stand out as a leading artist of her time. “All form – landscape, interiors, still life, flowers, animals, people – has an inarticulate grace and beauty; painting to me is expressing this form in colour, colour vibrant with light – but containing this other, silent quality which is unconscious, and belongs to all things created.” Grace Cossington Smith1 Cossington Smith grew up in Thornleigh, Northern Sydney and sparked her creative interest early on during her time at Abbotsleigh where she was exposed to art classes led by Albert Collins and Alfred Coffey. Although she had spent two years abroad, it was not until her return to Sydney that she studied European art and was influenced by Jean-Antoine Watteau, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh. Due to the illness of her sister, Cossington Smith spent a lot of time indoors taking care of her. The focus of her paintings turned to domestic interiors. Garden Bunch, 1946 is a beautiful example of her skill as a colourist.
