1975 AMC RAMBLER MATADOR X COUPE
US VIN No: A4G167PA056. Engine No: C69056
  • Notes:
Introduced in 1974, the Matador coupe was designed by Richard Teague and racing car driver Mark Donahue, who was a major protagonist in developing the Javelin into a competitive racing car. At the time, the styling was different from the mainstream Ford and General Motors designs. For starters, the big round headlights, nicknamed the Bug Eye, were considered excessive and the smoother flowing lines and contours of the body also attracted controversy. People either loved or hated the Matador X and although Car and Driver called it the best styled car of 1974, this was probably because there was no real innovation in design in coupes in the class that year and probably also the reason why a Matador X featured in the 1974 James Bond film Man with the Golden Gun. It was right for the time. Stardom aside, the Matador X was never intended to be a performance car, although it looked the part sometimes. Today Matador X coupes and the earlier variants are a rare sight. The model was built with CKD in Mexico, Australia and the UK, but very few survive today. Currently the desirability of the Matador seems to be growing, as with all forgotten things from the 70’s. The AMC Matador was assembled in Australia using 1971 standard equipment. The Matador coupe CKD kits arrived in late 1974. The inventory included 160 Matador X coupes which were purportedly not assembled until 1975/1976 and, it is believed, that of these 160 units a mere 80 cars were assembled and 10 held back as spare parts. The remaining 90 were destroyed by exposure to the elements. The AMI-built Matador is reputed to be the last AMC vehicle of any kind to carry the Rambler name. This car was the last to join Clem’s collection after it was purchased at auction in Melbourne in late 2016. Soon after purchase, Clem had the car repainted and trimmed. Unfortunately, Clem didn’t get to finishing this project and the car will be sold ‘as is’ in a dismantled state. This car is powered by the V8-360-cid engine with a 3-speed automatic floor shift gearbox with front disc brakes and drums to the rear. This Matador X is in running order with interior and body parts detached, with most having been recommissioned in preparation for re-assembly. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
