    1964 PORSCHE 356SC COUPE
Chassis number: 131644. Engine Number: 821629.
  • Notes:
The 356C represented the final incarnation of the 356 line, dating back from the early 1950s. First released in 1963 for all round enjoyment, the C is regarded as the ultimate 356 model to own and even more so with the SC motor. This engine produced a greater 95bhp output coupled with 4-wheel disc brakes (a first for Porsche) creating a high-speed autobahn cruiser as well as a manageable town car with the distinctive Porsche styling. The car presented for auction was manufactured by the Porsche factory on 30 November 1964 and delivered to its first owner, a German resident of Playa Del Mar, California, on 1 June 1965. It is believed to be one of the last 356s produced by the factory as by this time Type 901 production was underway and the 911 was born soon after. This example retains its original motor, body and gearbox which defines it importantly as a “matching numbers” vehicle. The body and paintwork have been restored and a comprehensive file of works undertaken is available for viewing along with the relevant invoices. In 1996, the car was imported in to NZ and received an exemption for being in its original factory left hand drive configuration. A subsequent conversion to right hand drive took place in 2004. This work was entrusted (as was most of the foregoing) to NZ’s only recognised 356 authority, the Picton-based entity “One at a Time” and included the correct suspension drop arm specific to driving on "our side" of the road. Additional features that accompany the vehicle are: genuine Talbot Berlin mirrors, Factory chrome luggage rack, correct original steering wheel and Blaupunkt radio. Porsches of this calibre and in such condition rarely come to market hence this sale represents a unique opportunity to purchase a truly significant version of this renowned marque.
