  • Lot Description:
Martin, R. Montgomery. The British Colonies. Their History, Extent, Condition and Resources
Five volumes (of six), large octavo, with 36 handcoloured engraved maps, and 32 plates (of 33), half calf of the period, spines gilt. London and New York, Printing and Publishing Company, n d. but circa 1854.
  • Notes:
First published in 1834 and extensively revised and extended over the next twenty years, Martin’s comprehensive account of the British Colonies encapsulates the remarkable growth of the British Empire under Queen Victoria. A former Colonial Treasurer at Hong Kong, Martin’s constantly revised and expanded book is “a work of extraordinary research, reference, and completeness” (Hocken), although it is perhaps now most notable for its fine series of highly decorative handcoloured Tallis maps. This set lacks the sixth volume but has the six important Tallis maps of goldrush Australia. Not in Ferguson, who records only a separate issue of the Australian volume.
