  • Lot Description:
Ham, Thomas, the successors of (publisher). The Gold Diggers Portfolio Consisting of A Series of Sketches
of the Victoria Gold Fields taken by Talented Artists on the spot [wrapper title]. Octavo by dimensions, with 14 engraved or lithographed plates, bound with the original titling–wrapper decorated with small vignettes of goldfields activity, in old half morocco, the Adrian Knox copy. Melbourne, [The successors of Thomas Ham], 1854.
  • Notes:
First edition of this rare and important portfolio of goldfields views. Drawn substantially from engravings and lithographs produced to illustrate Ham’s Illustrated Australian Magazine, most of these plates are unsigned but they are the work of William Strutt, David Tulloch, George Strafford, and – perhaps predominantly – of Thomas Ham himself. Issued loose in a fragile paper folder, this is a notably rare piece. Ham’s portfolio is “a fine work and an unusual record of the artistic activity of the period in Victoria, a period during which many able professional artists came to the colony in search of gold and left a permanent impression on the cultural life of the Australian colonies” (Wantrup). The Joachim copy has a complete set of fourteen plates issued in the first edition; one plate (“The Treasury Melbourne, Arrival of the Monster Gold Escort”) with the imprint of Stringer, Mason & Co., and so issued. Ham had sold his business to Cyrus Mason and F. Stringer in October 1853, before the publication of the Portfolio, and Stringer sold his share of the business to Mason early in 1854, perhaps before the publication of the Portfolio. Ferguson, 10178I (calling for twelve plates only); Wantrup, 254a.
