  Hale, John. Manuscript diary of John Hale, embarked from Liverpool on the Thorwaldsen, 29 July 1852
  bound for Melbourne docking in Hobson’s Bay on 10 November 1852. Manuscript journal, octavo, around 230 pages ink manuscript (plus a few blanks at the rear), semi-limp cloth, modern leather rebacking. At Sea and Victoria, 1852.
• Notes:
  Interesting journal of a gold rush emigrant. Hale’s account of the voyage, which occupies about two-thirds of the text, follows his routine: time of rising and retiring, menu, and weather, with a few anecdotes of shipboard life. On arriving in Melbourne he and his companions stay for three weeks in a tent near the Barracks of the 40th Regiment. He describes Melbourne’s landmarks, and the street life, and gives an amusing account of visiting the post office. Arriving in Bendigo, he purchases a bark hut and spends a month trying his luck at mining. His return trip to Melbourne is along the Campaspe, via McIvor and Kilmore, and he buys a shop in Wellington St. Collingwood. Long and detailed diaries of gold-seekers once in the colony are rarely seen since, no matter how energetic their shipboard journals and however good their intentions, the rigours of life on the goldfields left no time and less enthusiasm for private journalism.
