  • Lot Description:
Gill, Samuel Thomas. [Diggers & Diggings of Victoria as they are in 1855. Drawn on Stone by S, T, Gill…
No. 1-3] bound with [Sketches in Victoria, Part 4.] Oblong quarto, 24 handcoloured lithographs, some damp marks throughout not affecting the coloured images, bound with the front wrapper to another work in modern dark green morocco. Melbourne. James J. Blundell & Co., 1855.
  • Notes:
A collector’s assemblage of 24 lithographs from the rarely encountered handcoloured issues of these two important series of 1855. The volume comprises Parts I-4 of Diggers & Diggings of Victoria as they are in 1855, complete but for one plate from Part 1; however, the set here includes the plate from Part 3 entitled “Mount Macedon from the Black Forest” that is omitted by Bowden in error. Added to these three parts is Sketches in Victoria Part 4 (complete). The handcoloured issues of both works are of considerable rarity with even single parts almost never encountered. The handcoloured issues are not simply the ordinary issues with added colour. The plates are plain lithographs printed on a very different and slightly smaller paper stock. The present very nearly complete set of Gill’s Diggers & Diggings of Victoria as they are in 1855 and the complete fourth part of Sketches in Victoria was erroneously bound in modern times with a wrapper for the Gill’s contemporaneous The Diggers & Diggings of Victoria as they were in 1852. Given the complexity of Gill’s Victorian pieces this is a readily excusable (and explicable) mistake. Bowden, p. 124; Ferguson, 9921 (part) and 9922 (noting this cumulative issue of Parts 1-3); Wantrup, 247 (part) and 248 (part).
