  Gill, Samuel Thomas. Sketches in Victoria Drawn on Stone by S.T.G. No. 1 [– 3]... [wrapper title]
  Three parts, oblong octavo, each with eight plain lithographs, sewn in the repaired original titling-wrappers to Part 1, a little soiling, preserved in an elaborate quarto collector’s bookform box. Melbourne, James J. Blundell & Co., [1855].
• Notes:
  Very rare: Gill’s first essay in urban topography. Blundell and Gill made enterprising use of Gill’s popularity, issuing his various collections in various formats and even as illustrated letter paper. Sketches in Victoria was a major undertaking issued over 1855-6, and probably only concluded by Gill’s departure for Sydney – the final part was ‘short’, comprising only five plates instead of the eight issued in each preceding part. As publication proceeded, Blundell issued the separate parts in cumulative combinations. The present set is a cumulative issue of the first three parts (as noted by Ferguson). Sets (and individual plates) are usually seen as tinted lithographs; the present set is on the different, more absorbent, paper that is used for the rare handcoloured issues. It is possible – and we strongly suspect – that the tinted lithographs were issued later. Gill’s short fourth and final part of the Sketches, comprising five lithographs only, is lacking here but is present (in the rare handcoloured form) in the previous lot.
