Lot Description:Betts, John (published by). Betts’s Map of the Gold Regions of Australia
Lithographed map, 340 x 450 mm, handcoloured in outline, the gold regions highlighted in yellow, with inset map of the Port Phillip District, mounted on linen and so issued. London, John Betts, circa 1852. -
Notes:Rare: an elusive example of an always most uncommon species of cheap sixpenny map, directed to generally impecunious gold-diggers or would-be gold diggers as a guide to the Australian diggings once they arrived in the colony. The Map of the Gold Regions was issued separately and is a much revised version with considerable new detail of Betts’s map of South-Eastern Australia that was issued in 1848 as map 43 in Bett’s Family Atlas. See Tooley, 171.
