  • Lot Description:
Wilkes, Charles. Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition. During the years 1838, 1839, 1840…
1841, 1842… With Illustrations and Maps. Five volumes, octavo, with eleven maps (ten folding), and 300 woodcut illustrations throughout, bound in (publisher’s?) speckled calf, spines with raised bands, gilt ruled, and contrasting title labels. Philadelphia, Lea and Blanchard, 1845.
  • Notes:
Wilkes’s great United States Exploring Expedition was the first major American emulation of the grand circumnavigations of the English, Dutch, Russians, and French. This is a nice set of the trade edition of Wilkes’s narrative of the expedition, directed to the general reader. Rivalling the elaborate publications of the French grands voyages, the complete official narrative, with its scientific reports and accompanying atlases, was issued in about thirty volumes over three decades. Ferguson, 4208; Forbes, 1575; Haskell, 3; Hill 2, 1866 (another edition); Renard, 1698 (q.v.); Rosove, 353.B2 (“uncommon”).
