Lot Description:Westmacott, Captain Robert Marsh. Sketches in Australia, from Drawings by Captain R.M. Westmacott
(late 4th King’s Own Regiment.) F,G.S., F.R.G.S. Royal quarto, 18 tinted lithographed plates, each with a leaf of descriptive text (one with a tiny hole); bound in half dark green morocco and moiré cloth sides of the period, green morocco label on the front board lettered and decorated in gilt. [Exeter, Printed at W. Spreat’s Lithographic Establishment, circa 1852]. -
Notes:Rare collective issue. Westmacott’s Sketches was originally issued in three parts in about 1848. At some time in or after 1852, Westmacott had an undated typographic title-page printed to be issued with the complete work. This very rare issue was first noted by Michael Organ (locating two copies) and Wantrup (noting another); to these may now be added the Joachim copy, the Davidson copy, and the Wettenhall copy (the latter was, however, a further variant). Ferguson, 4955; Kerr, pp. 850-1; Wantrup, 236; Wettenhall, 279. See also Michael Organ “Bibliographical Notes on Captain R.M. Westmacott’s ‘Sketches in Australia’”, Biblionews, September, 1986, pp. 79 – 81.
