Notes:A set of Arago’s Souvenirs, comprising the four-volume first edition of Souvenirs d’un Aveugle with the rare supplementary volume, Chasses – Drames. A popular and important account, Souvenirs d’un Aveugle was an extensive rewriting and expansion of Arago’s earlier 1822 account of Freycinet’s Uranie expedition. With numerous illustrations not included in the earlier book, it is effectively a completely new work. Originally published in parts between 1838 and 1840, this handsome work was widely popular with many editions and issues. Arago’s Souvenirs has been ill-described in the bibliographies and copies of this first edition have been noted with 58, 60, or 62 plates. Chasses – Drames, the supplementary fifth volume was published in the following year by a different publisher and is rare. It comprises a selection of further illustrated reminiscences, many detailing close encounters with wild animals. First work: Bagnall, 124 (undescribed); Davidson, p. 112; Ferguson, 2689a(rev) not specifying plates; Forbes, 1134 (calling for 60 plates); Hill 2, 30 (noting 61 plates); Sabin, 1866. Second work: Bremer, 17 (q.v.); Ferguson, 2906aa; not in Forbes, Hill, or Sabin.
