  • Lot Description:
Freycinet, Rose Marie Pinon de Saulces de. Campagne de l’«Uranie» (1817 – 1820).
Journal de Madame Rose de Saulces de Freycinet d’après le manuscrit original accompagnée de notes par Charles Duplomb… Quarto, with 25 plates (most after Arago and Pellion) of which ten are handcoloured, and three double-page and handcoloured, and a map, a fine copy, preserved in a bookform box. Paris, Société d’ Éditions Géographiques, Maritimes et Coloniales, 1927.
  • Notes:
Extremely scarce: the first edition of Madame Rose de Freycinet’s journal of the voyage of the Uranie. Rose de Freycinet, unwilling to be separated from her husband, was smuggled on board contrary to regulations. Her presence was greeted with some concern by the crew but she was generally accepted in the places they visited, although at times with raised eyebrows. As a result of her presence, the contrast between the original expedition artwork and the published plates is very marked for the Uranie voyage. Rose is depicted quite often in the original artwork but, because her presence remained a secret even after the return of the expedition, she has been edited out of the published plates in all instances. Hill 2, 652.
