Lot Description:Arago, Jacques Étienne Victor. Promenade autour du monde pendant les années 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820
sur les corvettes du Roi l’Uranie et la Physicienne, commandés par M. Freycinet. Two volumes, octavo, text, and folio Atlas with 23 lithographed plates, fine set, the text volumes bound in French half calf and marbled boards of the period, yellow edges, the atlas in original pastepaper boards with printed label on the front board. Paris, Leblanc, 1822. -
Notes:First edition: very scarce narrative of the Freycinet expedition in the Uranie by the official artist, with a striking series of lithographs in the atlas. The substantial group of Arago’s illustrations published in the official account of the voyage vary greatly with those in this volume which are much freer and more spontaneous. A large part of his narrative relates to New South Wales, with descriptions of Sydney, of a trip to the Blue Mountains, and of meetings with Governor Macquarie and Surveyor-general John Oxley. The book is rare with the atlas. Ferguson, 850; Hill 2, 28.
