  Launceston: Signal Book. L[indsay?], D. Original manuscript Signal Book
  Octavo, pen and ink manuscript, 110 pages, illustrated with 167 fine ink and watercolour thumbnail flags and pennants, full-page ink and watercolour Compass Signals and Numeral Flags, and five ink and watercolour ship vignettes, bound in gilt and decorated calf of the period, titled “Signals” on the front board, the original extensively gilt-decorated spine expertly relined. Scotland (Glasgow?), circa 1811 – 1820.
• Notes:
  A fine and rare example of a mariner’s private compilation of maritime signals as used by the Royal Navy and by private vessels. The book appears to have been compiled by one “D.L.”, whose prominent initials are on the ‘title’ leaf. That leaf also carries a later manuscript gift inscription: “Martin Moubray Stephenson’s Book, from John Lindsay, Esq., Glasgow, Scotland”, which indicates pretty certainly that the book of the original compiler “D. L[indsay?]” was given to Stephenson by John Lindsay. The book is of significant Australian interest: at the end is a list of “Marryat’s Code of Signals as used at the Port of Launceston, V.D.L.” on two pages, illustrated with coloured flags. Marryat’s Code was first issued in 1817. The date on the ‘title’ page appears to be 1811 but close inspection indicates that the final digit was cancelled at some stage and the faint remaining indications suggest a date of 1818 or 1819.
