  Collins, David. An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales, from its first Settlement
  in January 1788, to August 1801: with Remarks on the Dispositions, Customs, Manners, &c. of the Native Inhabitants of that Country... The Second edition. Quarto, with a map and folding chart, 24 engraved plates (three handcoloured), eight engravings in the text (two handcoloured), fine copy, bound in more recent morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. London, T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1804.
• Notes:
  Second edition. Collins’s income had been severely affected by his long service in New South Wales and it was largely in an attempt to eke out the family income that he had published his two-volume history of the colony in 1798 – 1802. He began the work of abridging these two volumes late in 1802, intending to issue a cheaper edition so as to reach new readers who could not afford the expensive two-volume edition. When he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the intended new settlement at Port Phillip, the whole job of editing fell to his wife, Maria. She continued her husband’s revision quickly and skilfully, and completed the book with new information available to the end of 1803. Davidson, pp. 91-2; Ferguson, 390; Wantrup, 21.
