Lot Description:The Sterling Silver Trophy Cup And Cover For The 1900 New Zealand Inanimate Pigeon Shooting Association Inter-Club Cup
MAKER'S MARK ADOLPH KOHN, NEW ZEALAND, CIRCA 1900 Bearing the inscription 'The / N.Z / Inanimate / Pigeon Shooting / Association / Inter-Club Cup / 1900,' inscribed verso 'Won by / Mr Arthur Duvall / on 19/9/03 / renamed / The Royal Artillery Cup / Ubique / and presented by him to / The Northern Gun Club / to be held by that club as / The New Zealand Inanimate Bird / Championship Cup,' the waisted body gadrooned to the lower section, flanked by leaf capped scroll handles, rising to a domed cover with a finial realistically rendered in the form of a clay pigeon trap, raised on a jewelled stem and a spreading circular foot, hallmarked A. Kohn warranted sterling silver twice to the underside of the foot rim, 2545 grs.total weight of silver, 41.5cm high. -
Notes:Note: Reference to the commission of the cup can be found in The Evening Post, Volume LIX. Issue 10 12th January 1900 page 6, where it is stated that '... A local jeweler has been instructed to draw out designs for a 50 pound cup to be called the NZ Inter Club Cup for inanimate pigeon shooting. This can be fired for by any club on its own ground (if affiliated) provided a responsible officer of the club is on the ground to see that the association rules are carried out, and an official score sheet kept.'
