  • Notes:
Gareth Sansom held his first exhibition in 1959 in Richman Gallery in Melbourne. He has participated in numerous solo and group shows since then, including solo exhibitions at John Buckley Fine Art (later John Buckley Gallery) almost annually from 2000-2007. Sansom was also well known as Head of Painting and then Dean of the School of Art at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1977 to 1991. According to John Stringer, "A pioneer in expressionist painting since the 1960s, Sansom's works are still distinguished by their free and uninhibited character...Being largely self-referential, Sansom's subjects relate to the metropolitan milieu of which he is an alert, perceptive and sardonic observer, unafraid to tackle or parody social taboos."1 Sasha Grishin's comments on Sansom are relevant in the context of Ron's South Yarra Dracula Party, in which ambiguous and potentially menacing figures float across the dark picture plane: "His major pieces...open up precisely the question of altered states and fluid identities, by commenting on delusional obsessions, hallucinations and the confusion of gender roles."2 Sansom's work is represented in private and/or public collections in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, India and the United States of America, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 2008, he was awarded The John McCaughey Memorial Prize and in 2012 he won the Dobell Prize for Drawing. He represented Australia in the 7th Indian Triennale in 1991 and a major survey exhibition, Welcome to My Mind: Gareth Sansom, a Study of Selected Works 1964-2005, was held at the Ian Potter Museum of Art in 2005-2006, concurrent with a solo show at John Buckley Fine Art.
