• Notes:
  Angela Brennan was born in Ballarat. She completed a Fine Arts degree in Painting at RMIT in 1982, travelled to Europe and returned to live and paint in St Kilda. In 1989, she held her first solo show, at George Paton Gallery, Melbourne University, where she was completing a Bachelor of Arts. In 1991, she held the first of eight solo shows at Niagara Galleries and in 1993 she started showing at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney. It is her abstract grids, blocks and squiggles of colour that have put her up with other big-name abstract artists, such as Ken Whisson and Paul Boston, but Brennan has always practiced a range of styles, including portraiture and landscapes. The inspiration for her paintings is taken from everyday life, from snapshots to album covers. Objects played a big part in her earlier work, for a landmark exhibition at Gertrude Street in 1992 she says " I just picked up my lounge room and dumped it in the gallery ". She continues to add to her repertoire of painting styles, including abstracts, text paintings, portraits, interiors and landscapes, and more recently has expanded her practice to include ceramics and sculptural installations. In 2006 the Monash University Museum of Art held a major survey exhibition of her work, titled Angela Brennan: every morning I wake up on the wrong side of capitalism.
