  Artist Statement, November 2000: The imagery is derived from popular culture, with particular focus on Cyber Culture, home computers and the internet. The series title for these works Technopop is named after a song by the German Group Kraftwerk, whose use of computers in popular music during the 70's and 80's has been particularly influential. The compositions are high-keyed, both in subject and colour, and constructed and reconstructed using a computer into a virtual collage, drawing upon a large collection of source material. I rely only on instinct and serendipity to reach a desired result. Images can seem to " float to the surface ", without too much conscious intervention. The final composition is something I recognise when I see, but don't necessarily foresee. By " borrowing ", then combining diverse and sometime conflicting material, I inhabit it and make it personal. I gather things from a broader culture, bend it around, and change its significance. It's like sampling in contemporary music. Images are stripped of their original context, and combined with other images in unexpected ways. Different classes of object, and different modes of representation are juxtaposed. The paintings are almost photographic in their degree of veracity, while still remaining attentive to the physical, sensual quality of oil paint. Although I have a taste for a certain " coolness " of execution, the images seem to come alive when they are painted. They are transformed. I am an " old-fashioned " painter of completely modern subject matter.
