Notes:Inspired by the all-round abilities of the American-made World War II Jeep, the iconic British-built Land Rover was conceived by the Rover Car Company as a civilian go-anywhere runabout for farmers and general commercial use, and first appeared just two years after the war ended, in prototype form, in 1947. The earliest Series 1 Land Rovers all shared an 80-inch wheelbase on a box-section steel chassis with lightweight and easily detachable aluminium bodywork panels, which included the doors, bonnet, and windscreen frame. Introduced as a two-door roadster-style utility, the Land Rover's engineering was rugged and its styling certainly rudimentary, but most importantly it featured permanent four-wheel drive using a standard four-speed manual gearbox combined with a specially built dual-range transfer box.
