Lot Description:Eight Fine Large and Ancient Stone Axe Heads from Papua New Guinea and Torres Strait Island
I always kept the best stone axes for my own personal collection, the criterion for keeping them was the best shape & feel in my own hand. These have been in my private collection drawers for 40 years. Including: One of my favourites in this group at the very top where it looks not finished with a deep working groove down the middle, I always told people that probably the owner was making it the day one of his friends showed up with a steel axe & he was so jealo XXX; - Far Left: Polynesia (17cm); The large Light Coloured Tear Drop Shaped a Ceremonial Stone Axe (27cm) is from Kiwai Island but made & traded from the Torres Strait in the 19th Century (there is an important article about these Stones in the Journal of Pacific Archaeology - Vol. 7 ∑ ; top Left: a Fine Massim Presentation Wealth Stone called Giyazago; Middle with incised cross hatching is a Fine Old Tapa Beater from the Eastern Highlands Province (27cm); Two Far Right are From the WHP; Top Right a Fine Ancient Stone Pestle from Enga Province (21cm).
