IRISH GOVERNESS CART BY JOHN O'NEILL & SON, LIMERICK, 1880s
This delightful Irish governess cart carries an ivorine label for its maker and has survived in good partially restored order. Designed to carry a governess and several small children, governess carts have shafts attached to the underside of the body with braces which will break in case of an accident without particular danger to the occupants or the horse. The coachwork is of iron-braced steam-bent ash, with a sturdy door and step at the rear. This example has short half-Pagnell shafts suitable for a medium sized pony. The coachwork is sound, requiring some minor work to the rear door, painting and trimming. One steam-bent wing board is missing. The wheels have recently been rebuilt by Mark Burton with new rims, channel and rubber tyres.
