Laurie Seaman was born in Glen Cove, Long Island New York to an affluent family, after graduating from Swarthmore College in 1915 as a civil engineer he went on to train as a test pilot in the U.S.Army during the war years. By 1925 he had immigrated to Sydney and had married Christinia Bell, the daughter of Ernest W.Bell owner of the firm he was then working for. As an adventurous and world-wise American he was a member of a number of clubs including the Millions Ski Club. It was during a trip to Mount Kosciusko in 1928 with the ski club that he another member got caught in a blizzard and died. His name since then is synoymous with Mount Kosciusko as his American father financed the construction of a memorial hut at the sight that his body was found. Various members of the graduating year at Swarthmore College have autographed their entry in the The Halcyon.
