Lot Description:A Rare Chinese Root Carving of The King of Beggars with two young helpers, well carved with good detail. Qing Dynasty
The King has a beautiful smiling face with open mouth revealing fine teeth & furrowed brow below a wreath of decorated cord. Standing on one leg the other muscular leg raised wearing a plaited thong, arms raised, one holding a staff, tunic in layers following the contour of the ancient tree root. An opium pipe, hidden in the carving.
H90 x W56cm -
Provenance:British Revenue Officer in the Foreign Service - his role was to identify illegal opium dens [retired in 1932], thence by decent.

Notes:Condition: All intact except one attendant has small hands missing and two minor chips.
