signed and inscribed verso: S A Perry / View of the Valley of Rousseau or Queen's River in the Island of Dominica with the cascade and mountain called Morne Verte. / The columns of smoke near the right are Souffrieres. / Sketched one morning before breakfast. -

Notes:Samuel Augustus Perry was a watercolourist, surveyor and soldier. Appointed deputy Surveyor-General of New South Wales, he arrived in Australia in 1829. Perry, with Captain William Dumaresq, was responsible for returning to Venice the four bronze horses of St Mark's which Napoleon had removed to Paris.
