  • Notes:
Henry Jones (1826 – 1911) was a photographer remembered for his portraits of pioneer settlers of South Australia. An Englishman, Jones arrived in Victoria in the late 1850s and went to South Australia in 1866. From 1866 to 1868 he worked at Townsend Duryea’s studio in King William Street, Adelaide. By late 1868 he had his own studio in King William Street, where he produced cartes de visite and cabinet portraits. By the early 1870s he was making life-size portraits. On 28 December 1871, the 35th anniversary of the founding of the colony of South Australia, leading Adelaide merchant Emanuel Solomon hosted a banquet in Adelaide Town Hall for 520 ‘old colonists’, those who had arrived before 1841. The following year Henry Jones made photographic portraits of each of the colonists. From these images he created composite photographs, one of the men, and another of the women who had attended the banquet. (1890)
