Notes:John T. Thomas, stone cutter, was born in Trenton, N.J. in 1831. He first served as 1st Lt. in the 81st N.Y. Inf. and then joined the 117th N.Y. Inf. as a 2nd Lt. on 13 August, 1862. He was later promoted to 1st Lt. of Co. 'C' and then Capt. of Co. 'D'. Thomas served at the Siege of Suffolk, Battles of Cold Harbour, Chaffin's Farm, Darbytown Road and Siege of Petersburg, V.A. During the Battle of Fort Fisher, N.C. Thomas was shot through the heart and died instantly. He was aged 34 years. For his bravery he was made Brevet Major U.S.V.
