    203cm high, 80cm wide, 80cm deep
  • Notes:
This sculpture of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine (also known as the Drunken Bacchus), is the first of Michelangelo’s life-size sculptures. It is a testament to the influence of classic Greek and Roman statuary on the artists of the Renaissance. The pose of the supple, androgynous Bacchus is dynamic and the great skill of the Master is in shaping the marble to show all the muscles working under the skin, making the figure appear life-like. Accompanying the god is a small goat-legged satyr or faun who is eating a bunch of grapes that seems to be slipping out of Bacchus’ hand. The harmony and balance of the sculpture are technically perfect. Unlike the majority of Michelangelo’s sculptures, The Bacchus offers multiple points of view, one more beautiful than the other.
