Notes:Note: Michelangelo was 24 when he sculpted the Pietà in Rome. It was his first large sculpture that people could view from all sides. It is also one of the first works of art to be signed by an artist. The subject of the Pietà is the Virgin Mary cradling her dead son Jesus in her arms. The pose is reminiscent of the nativity in Bethlehem when she held him as a baby. In English the title translates to compassion or mercy. The evocative power of the work emanates from the composition of t he two figures. Mary’s slumped posture and her left hand express her resignation and immense pain, inviting the viewer to contemplate human mortality. Despite Michelangelo’s young age, the work is accomplished. The richness of the folds of Mary’s dress and veil, together with the realism of the relaxed muscles that can be made out under the skin of Christ’s body reveal the Master’s exquisite technique.
