    Sir Robert Peel refuses the extension of the Royal Mercy to John Miller, a prisoner "under sentence of Transportation on board the Hulks"
    7 June 1823 mss signed letter from Peel at "Whitehall" to a John Buchanan, who had sent a Petition and Letter to Peel, in his capacity as Home Secretary. Miller was sentenced to be transported for Life at the Sussex Special Sessions; he arrived in New South Wales in October 1824 aboard the convict ship "Mangles" along with 189 other convicts. Peel went on to serve twice as British Prime Minister. In Britain today policemen are commonly referred to as 'Bobbies'! Originally though, they were known as 'Peelers' in reference to Sir Robert Peel (1788 - 1850).
