    1948 Norton 500CC Model 18
    Frame No: C3 15002 CT; Engine No: C3 15002
  • Notes:
The year 1922 saw the birth of the first pushrod Norton. In 1924, the engine came to the fore with several racing victories, but Norton’s future works racing successes were scored with their over-head cam engines. The pushrod bikes, however, continued as highly sort after road going machines until 1963. Along the way, variants including the 600cc Model 19 and the sports ES2 were produced. Such was the demand and admiration for Norton. In the post war era of development, the Model 18 was the first pushrod Norton to go back into production in 1946. By 1947, this model gained Norton’s famous Roadholder front forks, yet retained a rigid rear end - not to be confused with the similar ES2, which was relaunched that year with plunger rear suspension. The Model 18 was also offered for trials use, distinguished by its upswept exhaust, but in general these were good solid sporting singles. Suitable for side car use too, the Model 18 was a good and consistent product for Norton with a purported top speed of 78mph. It was produced from 1922 until 1954 spanning 32 years at which time the rigid Model 18 was phased out and the 600cc Model 19 was reintroduced. This very nice example is believed to be Australian delivered and was found intact by the current owner in the mid north of South Australia while fossicking on farms and garden sheds for interesting classics. It underwent a comprehensive and sensitive restoration in 1998 and was last started about 6 years ago. It was registered in South Australia as TI D540 and regularly ridden to various club events. The bike features the original type Amal Monobloc carburettor and a Magneto ignition. This charming and genuine Model 18 500 single is looking for a new riding home with plenty more to give for future generations of Norton enthusiasts. This motorcycle will be sold unregistered.
